- 6 bratwurst sausages
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 12 ounces beer (lager or ale recommended)
- 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat and Prep: Heat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Caramelize Onions: In a large ovenproof skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook until golden and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Brown the Brats: Push onions to the side, add brats and brown slightly, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Add Beer and Mustard: Pour beer over the sausages and onions. Mix in the Dijon mustard.
- Braise in Oven: Transfer the skillet to the oven. Braise for 30-35 minutes, turning brats halfway through, until they are cooked through and the beer reduces to a sauce.
- Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with fresh thyme or parsley. Serve hot with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or sauerkraut.
