Oven Braised Beer Brats with Caramelized Onions

This dish not only warms the belly but also offers a satisfying ensemble of flavors that are perfect for any hearty meal occasion.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 1x

Ingredients

Scale

  • 6 bratwurst sausages
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 12 ounces beer (lager or ale recommended)
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Heat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Caramelize Onions: In a large ovenproof skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium. Add onions, sugar, and salt. Cook until golden and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Brown the Brats: Push onions to the side, add brats and brown slightly, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
  4. Add Beer and Mustard: Pour beer over the sausages and onions. Mix in the Dijon mustard.
  5. Braise in Oven: Transfer the skillet to the oven. Braise for 30-35 minutes, turning brats halfway through, until they are cooked through and the beer reduces to a sauce.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with fresh thyme or parsley. Serve hot with crusty bread, mashed potatoes, or sauerkraut.
